Female Scans

Lumps & Bumps

A lump under the skin that has appeared from nowhere, or one you have watched for months and want answered. A lumps and bumps ultrasound looks directly at the lump, shows what it is made of and how deep it goes, and puts a name to the most common causes on the day. Carried out and reported by a qualified sonographer in Great Yarmouth, usually within a few days of booking.

What Is A Lumps & Bumps Scan?

This scan uses ultrasound to examine a lump you can see or feel under the skin, almost anywhere on the body. A small handheld probe is placed directly over the lump and sound waves build a live image on screen, showing its size, depth, shape and internal structure, and whether it has a blood supply. There is no radiation and no injection.

The great majority of soft tissue lumps are benign, and most belong to a small number of familiar types: lipomas, which are soft fatty lumps; cysts, which are fluid filled sacs; and enlarged lymph nodes, which usually reflect the body reacting to something. Each of these has a characteristic appearance on ultrasound, which means a scan can very often tell you what the lump is, rather than just confirming that it exists. Just as importantly, it identifies the small minority of lumps that do not fit a typical benign pattern and need referral.

Who is it for?

Almost any lump you can feel under the skin can be scanned. These are the most common reasons men book, and most leave with a named answer.

A New Lump

Anywhere under the skin: arms, legs, trunk, neck, armpit or groin.

A Changing Lump

Growing becoming painful or changing texture. Change is the reason to look properly.

Longstanding Lumps

Soft lumps you have had for years are usually lipomas. A scan confirms it.

Swollen Glands

Lumps in the neck, armpit or groin are often lymph nodes, assessed on the day.

Lumps Over Joints

Ganglions are common around the wrist, hand, ankle and knee.

Before Removal

Telling a surgeon exactly what it is, how big, and how deep it goes.

What To Expect

A quick, comfortable scan focused entirely on the lump that brought you in, with what has been found explained to you before you leave.

Duration

Around 10 - 15 minutes for a single lump. Allow up to 30 minutes at the clinic, with time to talk through the findings on the day.

Preparation

None at all. There is no need to fast or make any special arrangements. Simply wear clothing that allows the lump to be reached easily, and remove jewellery over the area if relevant.

What the experience is like

You will be seated or lying down so the lump is easy to reach. Warm gel is applied and the probe is moved gently over and around it, measuring it, assessing its structure and checking its blood flow. A tender lump may ache briefly under the probe, but it does not otherwise hurt.
