Muscles & Joints: Private Elbow Ultrasound in Norfolk
What Is An Elbow Scan?
An elbow ultrasound scan uses advanced diagnostic ultrasound to examine the tendons, ligaments, nerves and soft tissues surrounding the elbow joint. It provides detailed, real-time images that help identify the cause of pain without radiation or injections.
Because the structures around the elbow lie close to the skin, ultrasound offers exceptional image quality and can accurately diagnose many of the most common causes of elbow pain. It is particularly effective for assessing tennis elbow, golfer’s elbow, tendon injuries, bursitis, ligament damage, ulnar nerve irritation and joint inflammation.
Unlike static imaging, ultrasound also allows the elbow to be assessed during movement, helping to identify tendon instability and nerve movement that may only become apparent when the joint is in use.
Included in your scan
What’s Covered
- Common extensor tendon – Detailed assessment for tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis), including tendon degeneration, inflammation, calcification and tears.
- Common flexor tendon – Examination for golfer's elbow (medial epicondylitis), tendinopathy and associated soft tissue changes.
- Distal biceps tendon – Evaluation for inflammation, partial tears, complete rupture and tendon degeneration where it attaches below the elbow.
- Triceps tendon – Assessment of the tendon at the back of the elbow for injury or inflammation.
- Olecranon bursa – Examination for bursitis, swelling and fluid accumulation over the point of the elbow.
- Ulnar nerve – Assessment for nerve enlargement, irritation and instability, including dynamic evaluation while the elbow moves.
- Joint fluid and surrounding structures – Examination for joint effusion, synovitis and other soft tissue abnormalities.

Private Elbow Ultrasound
Who is it for?
An elbow ultrasound is recommended for people experiencing ongoing elbow pain, weakness, swelling or reduced function. It is particularly valuable for diagnosing tendon injuries, nerve problems and soft tissue inflammation.
Tennis Elbow
Pain on the outside of the elbow, especially when gripping, lifting or twisting objects, is commonly caused by tennis elbow. Ultrasound assesses the severity of tendon damage and helps guide the most appropriate treatment.
Sudden Pain After Lifting
A sharp pain or popping sensation while lifting may indicate a distal biceps tendon injury. Early diagnosis is important to determine whether surgical assessment may be required.
Tingling or Numb Fingers
Pins and needles affecting the ring and little fingers are often linked to irritation of the ulnar nerve. Dynamic ultrasound can assess both the nerve itself and how it moves during elbow flexion.
Golfer's Elbow
Pain along the inside of the elbow often results from irritation or degeneration of the common flexor tendon. Ultrasound helps determine the extent of the injury.
Swollen Elbow
Swelling over the tip of the elbow is frequently caused by olecranon bursitis. Ultrasound quickly confirms the diagnosis while excluding other possible causes.
Symptoms That Won't Improve
If rest, physiotherapy or elbow supports have failed to relieve your symptoms, an ultrasound scan can identify the underlying cause and help direct further treatment.

What To Expect
Your elbow ultrasound is a straightforward examination that provides detailed images of the tendons, ligaments, nerves and surrounding soft tissues. By combining static and dynamic imaging, your sonographer can accurately identify the source of your symptoms.
Appointment Length
The examination usually takes 15–20 minutes. Please allow around 30 minutes for your appointment, including time to discuss your results before you leave.
Before You Arrive
There's nothing you need to do before your appointment. Wearing a short-sleeved or loose-fitting top will make it easier to examine your elbow and forearm.
What the experience is like
You'll be comfortably positioned while the sonographer examines the front, back and sides of your elbow using ultrasound imaging. Depending on your symptoms, you may be asked to bend, straighten or rotate your arm so tendons and nerves can be assessed during movement, helping identify conditions that may not be visible when the joint is still.

Frequently Asked Questions
Ultrasound provides far more than a diagnosis. It shows whether the tendon is mildly inflamed, significantly degenerated or has developed partial tears. Understanding the extent of the damage helps determine whether physiotherapy, injection therapy or specialist referral is likely to be most beneficial.
Yes. This combination of symptoms raises the possibility of a distal biceps tendon rupture. Early diagnosis is important because complete ruptures often achieve the best outcomes when assessed promptly by an orthopaedic specialist. Ultrasound accurately determines whether the tendon is partially or completely torn.
For most tendon, ligament, bursa and nerve conditions around the elbow, ultrasound provides excellent diagnostic accuracy while offering the added benefit of real-time dynamic assessment. If deeper joint structures require investigation, your report will clearly recommend MRI where appropriate.
The most common cause is olecranon bursitis, where the small cushioning sac over the elbow becomes inflamed and fills with fluid. Ultrasound confirms the diagnosis quickly while helping to exclude other causes of swelling.
If the area is hot, red or associated with fever, medical assessment should be sought promptly as infection may require urgent treatment.
