Male Scans

Testes / Scrotum Scan

A lump you have found, a swelling that has changed, or an ache you cannot explain. A testicular ultrasound looks directly at both testicles and the surrounding structures, and is the standard first test for any scrotal lump or swelling. Carried out and reported by a qualified sonographer in Great Yarmouth, usually within a few days of booking.

What Is A Testes / Scrotum Scan?

This scan uses ultrasound to examine both testicles, the epididymis that sits behind each one, and the tissues around them. A small handheld probe is moved gently over the scrotum and sound waves build a live image on screen. Colour Doppler is used to assess blood flow to each testicle. There is no radiation and no injection.

Ultrasound is exceptionally good in this area. The testicles sit close to the surface, which means the images are detailed enough to measure a lump of a few millimetres, say whether it is fluid or solid, and show whether it sits inside the testicle or separate from it. That last distinction is the one that matters most, because lumps arising outside the testicle, such as epididymal cysts, are almost always benign, while a solid lump inside the testicle needs urgent specialist attention. Most scrotal lumps turn out to be one of a handful of harmless findings, and a scan replaces weeks of worry with an answer.

Who is it for?

Any change in the scrotum deserves a look, and most turn out to be harmless. These are the reasons men book, and checking early is always the right call.

A New Lump

Most are benign, but the only way to know which is to look, promptly.

A Swelling

One or both sides, sudden or gradual. Fluid, veins, hernia or testicle, the scan shows which.

Ache or Dragging

Persistent discomfort, commonly caused by varicoceles, cysts or inflammation.

A Change in Feel

Harder, larger, smaller or higher than you remember. Change is worth investigating.

Follow Up Rechecking

Follow Up Rechecking a known cyst, hydrocele or varicocele to confirm it is unchanged.

Fertility Checks

Varicoceles affect fertility, and a scrotal scan is a standard part of that assessment.

What To Expect

An intimate examination handled the way it should be: a private room, a matter of fact professional approach, and a scan that takes only a few minutes each side. Most men say afterwards it was far easier than they expected.

Duration

Around 15 minutes. Allow up to 30 minutes at the clinic, with time to talk through what has been found before you leave.

Preparation

None at all. There is no need to fast or fill your bladder, so eat and drink normally and come as you are.

What the experience is like

You will lie on your back with towels positioned so only the scrotum is exposed. Warm gel is applied and the probe is moved gently over each side in turn, with blood flow checked in both testicles. If a varicocele is being assessed you may briefly stand or bear down. A chaperone is available on request.
