About Male Scans
Most men who book with us have either noticed something themselves or been told to keep an eye on a symptom. Ultrasound is a fast, painless way to look inside the body using soundwaves. There is no radiation, no injections and no recovery time. You walk in, get scanned and walk out, usually inside half an hour.
You do not need a GP referral to book with us. You choose the scan, choose a time that suits you and pay a fixed price with nothing added afterwards. Your sonographer talks you through what he can see during the appointment, and a full written report follows so you have something to take to your GP or specialist if you need to. If we find something that needs urgent attention, we will tell you on the day and help you take the next step.
Male Scans
What to expect
Male scans are quick and there is very little to organise beforehand. Here’s how the appointment normally runs.
Duration
Most male scans take around 15 to 20 minutes, and you should allow around 30 minutes at the clinic in total. That includes a short chat before the scan about your symptoms and medical history, and time afterwards to go through what was found.
Preparation
Preparation depends on the scan. For upper abdomen scans you will need to avoid food for around six hours beforehand. For kidney and bladder scans you will be asked to drink water and arrive with a full bladder. Testicular, hernia and lumps and bumps scans need no preparation at all. We send full instructions when you book so you will know exactly what to do.
What the experience is like
You will be shown to a private room and asked to expose only the area being scanned. A warm gel is applied to the skin and a small handheld probe is moved across it. It’s painless, although there can be mild pressure over a tender area. Your sonographer will talk you through what he is seeing as he works, and you are welcome to ask questions at any point. Chaperones are available on request for any scan.
