About Female Scans
Most women who book with us have either noticed something themselves or have been experiencing upper abdominal pain, bloating or discomfort that is not going away. Ultrasound is a fast, painless way to look inside the body using sound waves. There is no radiation, no injections and no recovery time. You walk in, get scanned and walk out, usually within half an hour.
You do not need a GP referral to book. You choose the scan, choose a time that suits you and pay a fixed price. Your sonographer talks you through what he can see during the appointment, and a full written report follows so you have something concrete to take to your GP or specialist. If we find something that needs urgent attention, we will tell you on the day and help you take the next step.

What to expect
Female scans are quick and there is very little to organise beforehand. Here’s how the appointment usually runs.
Duration
Most female ultrasound appointments take around 15 to 20 minutes, although you should allow approximately 30 minutes for your visit. Your appointment includes time to discuss your symptoms, relevant medical history and any concerns with your sonographer before the examination, followed by a detailed ultrasound scan and an explanation of the findings afterwards, with the opportunity to ask any questions.
Preparation
Preparation requirements vary depending on the ultrasound scan you are having. Kidney and urinary tract scans may require some preparation before your appointment. If this applies to your scan, full instructions will be provided when you book. Upper abdominal scans usually require you to avoid eating for approximately 6 hours before your appointment. You may continue to drink small amounts of water unless advised otherwise. Musculoskeletal, soft tissue (lumps and bumps) and vascular ultrasound scans generally require no special preparation. Full preparation instructions will be sent with your booking confirmation. If you have any questions before your appointment, please contact Norfolk Medical Imaging and we'll be happy to advise you.
What the experience is like
You will be shown to a private room and asked to expose only the area being scanned. A warm gel is applied to the skin and a small handheld probe is moved across the area. It is painless, though there can be mild pressure over a tender area or when the bladder is full. Your sonographer will talk you through what he is seeing as he works, and you can stop and ask questions at any point. A chaperone is available for every scan and offered as standard for intimate examinations.
