Muscles & Joints: Private Hip Ultrasound in Norfolk
What Is A Hip Scan?
A hip ultrasound uses advanced diagnostic imaging to examine the soft tissues surrounding the hip joint, including the tendons, bursae, muscles and the joint itself. The scan provides detailed, real-time images without radiation or injections, helping to identify the cause of your symptoms quickly and accurately.
Many people assume hip pain originates from the joint itself, but in reality, a significant proportion of hip pain is caused by the tendons and soft tissues surrounding the joint. Ultrasound is particularly effective at assessing these structures, making it an excellent first-line investigation for many common hip conditions.
A hip ultrasound can diagnose gluteal tendinopathy, trochanteric bursitis, iliopsoas tendon disorders, tendon tears, muscle injuries, joint fluid and snapping hip syndrome. Dynamic imaging also allows the sonographer to observe tendons moving during the examination, helping identify problems that static scans cannot detect.
Included in your scan
What’s Covered
- Gluteal tendons – Comprehensive assessment of the gluteus medius and minimus tendons for tendinopathy, inflammation, degeneration and tears, which are among the leading causes of lateral hip pain.
- Trochanteric bursa – Examination for bursitis, swelling and inflammation around the outside of the hip.
- Hip joint effusion – Assessment for fluid within the hip joint that may indicate inflammation or an underlying joint condition.
- Iliopsoas tendon and bursa – Evaluation of the tendon at the front of the hip for inflammation, tendon injury and snapping hip syndrome.
- Dynamic assessment – Real-time imaging during movement to identify tendon snapping, instability and other movement-related abnormalities.
- Surrounding muscles – Assessment of the hamstring origin, adductor muscles and other soft tissue structures based on your symptoms.
- Adjacent soft tissue findings – Evaluation of abnormalities identified within the scan area, including enlarged lymph nodes or other soft tissue changes where clinically appropriate.

Who is it for?
A hip ultrasound is recommended for anyone experiencing ongoing hip pain, tenderness or reduced mobility. It is particularly valuable for assessing tendon injuries, bursitis and soft tissue conditions affecting the hip.
Pain on the Outside of the Hip
Pain that becomes worse when lying on the affected side, climbing stairs or walking is commonly associated with gluteal tendinopathy or trochanteric bursitis. Ultrasound provides a detailed assessment of these structures.
Snapping Hip
If your hip clicks or snaps during movement, ultrasound can assess the tendons dynamically to determine exactly which structure is responsible.
Physiotherapy Isn't Improving Your Symptoms
If rehabilitation has stalled, ultrasound can identify tendon tears, bursitis or other underlying conditions that may require a different treatment approach.
Groin Pain
Pain felt deep in the groin may arise from the hip joint itself or the iliopsoas tendon. Ultrasound helps distinguish between these common causes to support accurate diagnosis.
Sports Injuries
Hip ultrasound is highly effective for assessing tendon overload, muscle strains and soft tissue injuries sustained during sport or exercise.
Lump or Swelling Around the Hip
Ultrasound can evaluate soft tissue lumps and swelling, helping distinguish between bursae, cysts, enlarged lymph nodes and other abnormalities.

What To Expect
Your hip ultrasound is a safe and non-invasive examination designed to assess the tendons, bursae and surrounding soft tissues that commonly cause hip pain. The scan provides detailed, real-time images to help identify the underlying cause of your symptoms.
Appointment Length
Your scan will usually take 15–20 minutes. Please allow approximately 30 minutes for your appointment so your sonographer can explain the findings and discuss the next steps.
Before You Arrive
No preparation is necessary. Loose-fitting shorts or clothing that allows easy access to your hip and upper thigh will help ensure a comfortable examination.
During Your Scan
You'll lie comfortably on the examination couch while the sonographer examines different areas around your hip using ultrasound imaging. Depending on your symptoms, you may be asked to turn onto your side, lift your leg or rotate your hip so the tendons can be assessed during movement. This dynamic approach helps identify tendon abnormalities, bursitis and snapping hip syndrome with greater accuracy.

Frequently Asked Questions
Ultrasound can detect fluid within the hip joint and inflammation affecting the surrounding soft tissues, but it does not assess cartilage and bone in the same way as an X-ray. If osteoarthritis is suspected, your report will explain whether additional imaging would be beneficial. Ultrasound is particularly valuable for diagnosing tendon and bursal conditions that frequently mimic arthritis.
Pain over the outer aspect of the hip that worsens when lying on the affected side is commonly associated with gluteal tendinopathy or trochanteric bursitis. Ultrasound provides a detailed assessment of these structures and helps determine the severity of any tendon damage or inflammation.
The hip labrum sits deep within the joint and cannot be assessed adequately using ultrasound. If your symptoms suggest a labral injury or another condition affecting the inside of the joint, your report will clearly recommend MRI where appropriate. Ultrasound remains the preferred investigation for the tendons, bursae and other soft tissues surrounding the hip.
A snapping sensation is usually caused by a tendon moving over a bony prominence as the hip bends or straightens. Dynamic ultrasound allows the sonographer to observe this movement in real time, helping identify the exact tendon responsible while also assessing for associated inflammation or bursitis.
