Muscles & Joints: Private Calf Scan in Norfolk

What Is A Calf Scan?

A calf ultrasound uses advanced diagnostic imaging to examine the muscles, tendons and soft tissues of the lower leg. It provides detailed, real-time images without radiation or injections, helping identify the source of pain, swelling or injury quickly and accurately.

Ultrasound is particularly effective for diagnosing muscle tears, tendon injuries, haematomata and fluid collections within the calf. It can also assess healing following an injury, making it valuable for both diagnosis and monitoring recovery.

Dynamic imaging allows the muscles and tendons to be assessed during movement where appropriate, helping identify abnormalities that may not be apparent when the leg is at rest.

Private Calf Ultrasound

Who is it for?

A calf ultrasound is suitable for anyone experiencing persistent calf pain, swelling or a suspected muscle injury. It is particularly valuable for diagnosing sports injuries and monitoring recovery following treatment.

Sudden Sharp Calf Pain

A sudden pain or tearing sensation while running, jumping or pushing off may indicate a calf muscle tear. Ultrasound accurately identifies the location and severity of the injury.

Swelling Following an Injury

Persistent swelling may be caused by a muscle tear, haematoma or fluid collection. Ultrasound helps determine the underlying cause and assess the extent of the injury.

Monitoring Recovery

Repeat ultrasound examinations can assess how a muscle injury is healing, helping guide rehabilitation and determine when it is safe to return to sport or normal activities.

Sports Injuries

Whether you play football, run regularly, cycle or take part in recreational sport, calf ultrasound helps diagnose muscle strains and tendon injuries to support a safe return to activity.

Ongoing Calf Pain

If your symptoms have failed to improve with rest or physiotherapy, ultrasound can identify underlying muscle or tendon damage that may require further treatment.

A Lump Within the Calf

Ultrasound can assess soft tissue lumps, swelling and fluid collections within the calf, helping distinguish between muscle injuries and other soft tissue abnormalities.

What To Expect

Your calf ultrasound is a quick, non-invasive examination that assesses the muscles, tendons and surrounding soft tissues of the lower leg. It provides detailed imaging to help diagnose muscle strains, tears and other common causes of calf pain.

Appointment Length

Most calf ultrasounds take around 15–20 minutes. Please allow approximately 30 minutes for your appointment so your sonographer can explain the findings before you leave.

Before You Arrive

No preparation is necessary. Wearing shorts or loose-fitting clothing that provides easy access to your lower leg will help make your appointment as comfortable as possible.

During Your Scan

You'll lie comfortably while the sonographer examines the affected calf from several angles using ultrasound imaging. You may be asked to gently point or flex your foot, or lightly contract your calf muscles, allowing muscle fibres and tendons to be assessed during movement. This helps determine both the severity and exact location of any injury.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Ultrasound is one of the most effective imaging tests for diagnosing calf muscle injuries. It can accurately identify muscle strains, partial tears and complete ruptures while showing the precise location and extent of the injury, helping guide treatment and rehabilitation.

A sudden popping sensation is often associated with a tear of the gastrocnemius muscle, sometimes referred to as "tennis leg." Ultrasound can determine whether the injury involves the muscle, the musculotendinous junction or another nearby structure, allowing the most appropriate treatment plan to be developed.

Yes. Ultrasound is an excellent way to monitor muscle healing over time. Follow-up scans can assess tissue repair, reduction in swelling and the progress of recovery, helping your clinician or physiotherapist make informed decisions about rehabilitation and returning to activity.

No. You can book directly with Norfolk Medical Imaging without a GP referral. Following your appointment, you'll receive a comprehensive written report that can be shared with your GP, physiotherapist, sports therapist or orthopaedic specialist to support your ongoing treatment.
